Declan Meehan of East Coast FM spoke to Luan Parle after the opening of the M11 extension between Arklow and Rathnew on Monday.

Prior to the new section opening 33 lives were lost in 25 years, on what was described as Ireland’s most dangerous stretch of road.

Teresa Kelly who’s brother in law Jackie Kavanagh died with 4 others in September 1998 said “Today is a bitter/sweet day, I’m sure if we had this road all them years ago many of the accidents would not have happened, I understand when people say “I will get to Dublin or Wexford faster, it will cut so many minutes off the journey”  but the way I see it is getting there safer. I hope in 25 years time we will be able to say no one has died on this stretch of road.”
