Aughrim notes September 21

Community Games
Our community games athletics will hopefully begin on Monday September 28th. We have a great group of children and would love more adults and young TY students to join in and volunteer.

We are keen to kick off the athletics season at the end of September, but at this moment we do not have enough volunteers to support the number of juvenile and adult members. We are a thriving club with the highest ever membership but if we cannot recruit new volunteers for Monday night training we must look at other alternatives, such as, reducing the length of the season or limiting the numbers that can attend training. We would love to see some people coming forward, or even some TY students (for An Gaisce award). Formal training will be provided by Athletics Ire and volunteers will be paired with experienced coaches. We will hold a parents & adult members meeting in the Sports Complex on Monday September 21st at 7 to discuss and hopefully resolve the volunteer/coaching crisis.

Active Retirement

Great news! Art Classes – part funded by Wicklow VEC – commence in the Pavilion on Wednesday, September 30th at 10.30am. Aqua Aerobics continue on Thursdays at the Coral Leisure Centre in Arklow – meet to car share at Lawless’ Hotel at 10.20am – €4 per session.  At our October meeting on Tuesday 6th at 3pm we will be hosting our Annual Tea Dance to celebrate Positive Ageing Week. We look forward to welcoming our friends from neighbouring groups! Tuesday, October 27th will see us back at Brooklodge for pampering and lunch. The 60 Euro fee should be given in an envelope to Kay to the October meeting, please.  At our November meeting we will be having an introduction to Mindfulness with Fiona O’Donnell. Also in November Avondale Community College will have ‘Log on and Learn’ technology, one-to-one classes, conducted by their Transition Year Students – watch out for details.

Monday Coffee Mornings have recommenced. If you are interested in joining our group why not come along some Monday morning for a chat and a cuppa – a good way to start the week!

First Responders

Aughrim First Responders are as always seeking new volunteers. There will be a training weekend for new members on October 24th & 25th. No previous experience is necessary. If anyone is interested please contact Sharon Keogh 0871255623 or Dolly Lee 0863843194 for any further information or questions. The CFR group would also like to remind the community that there is a public access defibrillator located on the Credit Union Wall (Market Square). Anyone who wishes to learn about its use can come along to any of our monthly training sessions or contact us.

The Club along with the community were both saddened and shocked at the sudden passing of our Parish Priest Fr. Edward Barry – ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.  Our Under 12 Mini Festival football final last Saturday was cancelled as a mark of respect due to the sad passing of Fr. Barry. Fr. Barry would have had a lot of contact with this group of players on his regular visits to the school.

Our junior footballers were well beaten by a very strong Lacken team.  Our senior footballers are out in the League against Stratford this coming Saturday.   Our Race Night fundraiser is scheduled for Paddy’s next Saturday night – please come along and support this night.

Visit your local market at The Pavilion, Rednagh Rd, on Saturdays from 10 -2pm. A wide selection of local artisan produce including home baking, farm fresh free range eggs, meat & vegetables, pates & frittatas, new season jams & chutneys and lots more. Why not drop in for a tasting and see for yourself. You will also find wonderful handcrafts & Aran knits, natural handmade soaps & beeswax candles and beautiful handmade jewellery. And for the children, cute handmade fairy doors and magical fairy paraphernalia. Why not drop in for a cuppa and a warm welcome to our market cafe and see for yourself? For further information please contact: 0860866838.

The numbers: 4, 6, 12 and 20 were drawn in the Sports club lotto on Monday September 14th.  Match three winners were: Sheila Keogh, Aine Ni Leannachan, Des Doyle, Jimmy Mallick and Gerry Phelan.  The jackpot is €3600.
