A man who tried to abduct an 11-year-old girl in Co Laois has been jailed for 17 years, with the last four years suspended.
Michael Martin (36) originally from West Wicklow but with an address in Waterford City, tried to abduct the girl earlier in the year.
In handing down his sentence, Judge Keenan Johnston said that the accused had an ‘appalling criminal record’ and that had to be taken into account.
He also commended the girl’s brother for the bravery he had shown once it became apparent that his sister was in danger.
“He was extremely brave and showed great presence of mind, maturity beyond his years, and leadership.
“The shocking irony of this case is that Ireland would be expected to provide a safe environment for children.” he told the court.
Mr Martin had pleaded guilty to the attempted abduction which took place on March 4 last.
