In brief, 1Yi has a mission as follows:
We are seeking a signed declaration from all candidates in the next General Election that, if elected, they will call for / support / approve:
1) The People’s Assembly for Democratic Reform
Within six months of the next government taking office, a People’s Assembly will be formed to devise a modern mechanism for people-initiated referendums. There would be two types of People-Initiated referendums.
- a) Public/Citizen power to Veto
With the introduction of Public Veto referendums, the Irish people would have the power to initiate/trigger a referendum to prevent / block / stop poor legislation.
- b) Public/Citizen Initiatives
This instrument would provide the Irish people with the power to initiate/trigger a referendum to introduce new legislation or a constitutional amendment without waiting on government consent.
2) The People’s Referendum for Democratic Reform
One Year from the date the People’s Assembly is formed, a referendum will be held. The purpose of the referendum is to allow the people of Ireland to vote and decide if the mechanism for People-Initiated Referendums (The power to veto & citizen initiatives) should be put into the Irish Constitution.
More information can be found on our website www.1yi.ie including county lists of all those supporting 1Yi. To date, only three of the candidates for Wicklow have signed 1Yi declarations, but country wide well over 100 people have committed to the initiative.
