Wicklow Fine Gael Minister and General Election candidate Simon Harris has reaffirmed his commitment to ensure that we continue to invest in our public transport system here in Wicklow.
Speaking on this matter, Minister Harris stated: “One particular issue which consistently comes up when I meet people at my advice clinics throughout the constituency, at local events or when I call to their homes, is the need to invest, upgrade and expand our range of public transport services throughout Wicklow.
“I have long for increased DART capacity, which is badly needed. Increased frequency and reliability have also been widely flagged as areas which Irish Rail must work on. As a disability advocate, I am very concerned about accessibility, or lack thereof, at DART stations. Addressing these issues will remain a priority for me, should the people of Wicklow put their faith in me once more.
“In terms of our other forms of public transport, I would really like to see greater synchronisation between DART and Dublin Bus to ensure that commuters can avail of bus services once the DART arrives at the station.
“I have been assured that the Luas will be extended to Bray, which will provide a second rail alternative to this large commuter town – connecting to the city centre and major destinations along the corridor at Cherrywood, Sandyford and Dundrum. My aim is to continue to pursue this vital development.
“I campaigned with local communities in West Wicklow to address their concerns with regard to a lack of public transport services. We need to ensure that local communities have an adequate system in place so as to enable them to avail of public transport services when getting to and from college or work.
“Now that we have a healthy economy, we must ensure that we keep the recovery going. The next step is to invest in our services. If elected as TD for Wicklow once more, I will do all in my power to work with local communities to address their public transport concerns,” concluded Minister Harris.
