Suspected cases of Zika being investigated by HSE

It has been reported tonight that two suspected cases of the Zika virus are being investigated by the HSE.

One case is in a male and the other in an older woman.

The cases are unrelated and it is believed that both people recently returned to Ireland from abroad.

The Zika virus can lead to babies being born with abnormally small heads and underdeveloped brains.

It is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites, although it can also be sexually transmitted.

It is not known at the moment what country the people have visited or which hospital they are being treated in.
