Wicklow TD Andrew Doyle is among four candidates in the running for the role of Ceann Comhairle in the new Dáil.
Independent TD Maureen O’Sullivan, Sinn Fein’s Caoimhghin Ó Caoláin and Fianna Fáil’s Seán Ó Fearghaíl are also seeking the role.
Traditionally it has been the Taoiseach’s responsibility to appoint a Dáil Chair, but for the first time ever the job will be filled through a secret ballot.
The position will be highly prized in the forthcoming Dáil.
This is because its holder will be automatically returned if there is an early election.
