Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney GAA Club Notes

AGB U12s Boys had a great game against a strong An Tochar team.  AGB started brightly but missed several chances, An Tochar took to the counter and went 2-01 up.  AGB then got control of the game and scored a couple of  great goals and got it back to a draw.  AGB provided a strong defence, while An Tochar had a powerful fast moving forward line. In the second half AGB went ahead and An Tochar brought it back and then went four points up controlling the game. AGB forwards then clawed their way back into it and with five minutes  remaining, levelled the game. The last five mins AGB stepped up the intensity again and a cracking goal was scored  followed by two excellent points. Final score AGB 5:08 An Tochar 3:10.

Under 12s Boys Group 5 Mini League (Formally Group 3) AGB played Coolkenno last Monday night on a scoreline of 7-10 to 2-3. Despite the scoreline, the game was intense at times with some hard tackling on both sides and AGB had to work hard through the game to break down the challenge put up by a strong Coolkenno team up to the closing stages of the game. Unfortunately, our boys made life very tough at times particularly in the first half, sometimes taking the wrong options and shooting from longer distances ,rather than carrying the ball closer to goal which led to numerous wides in that half as a result, which could have led to a very different result.
However, following the interval and with some positional changes and a change in tactics, the team produced some cracking scores in the second half and were worthy winners on the night.

AGB’s Intermediate team played Barndarrig, AGB 4-10 to Barndarrig 2-06.  AGB’s Men’s Intermediate team picked up their fourth consecutive brace of points in Round 7 of the Division 2 league with a solid 10 point win over near neighbours Barndarrig in Pearses Park on Tuesday evening. With conditions ideal for football, AGB showed their intent to set about their task early and Daire McBride opened the scoring as early as the 2nd minute when blasting over following a neat layoff by returning county minor Darragh Fitzgerald, who was lining out for the Intermediates for the first time in 2016. Another of our county minors, Cormac O’Shea quickly up followed with a sweet long rang effort to get the lads off to a great start. This got even better in the 5th minute when an unmarked JP Hurley found himself one on one with the Barndarrig keeper to fire low and hard to the net to give AGB a 1-02 to no score lead.  Barndarrig, through their two towering midfielders, started to settle into the game and their impressive centre forward stroked over 2 points (one from a free) to open the visitors account. However, with the hardworking Philip Gleeson, Sean Hurley and Cal Kelly pulling the strings in the middle third, roving wing forward Cormac Hyland was able to benefit and replied in kind with two quick fire points of his own to keep the scoreboard ticking over and maintain the advantage. With our defence well marshalled by Tom Maher, James Tyrrell and Alan McBride, the visitors only posted two more points (one a free) to stay in touch but a trademark Darragh Fitzgerald point after selling his marker a dummy put AGB 6 points clear approaching the end of the half.

This quickly became 9 points when Daire McBride seized on a loose ball to gather possession close to goal and wrong foot the keeper to post AGB’s second major of the night leaving the half time score AGB 2-07 Barndarrig 0-04. Barndarrig signalled their intent at the start of the second half by moving their rangy midfielder to the edge of Tommy Hurley’s square at the start of the second half. AGB started very sluggishly and within 10 minutes of the restart, the lead was cut to 4 points as the visitors posted 1-02 without reply to really get the home side thinking. At this stage, AGB badly needed a score and the evergreen and reliable Philip Gleeson popped up to settle the home side with a well worked point. This was quickly followed up by a Cormac O’Shea free to give AGB some breathing space and establish a foothold in the second half. What followed then was the goal of the game. Following a short kick out, some great link up play through the hands between Tom Maher, Danny O’Harte, Karl Kirwan and Darragh Culleton sent the impressive Cal Kelly through on goal and he finished with aplomb from 20 yards to put the home side firmly back in the driving seat with 10 minutes left. AGB sealed the game with 3 more well-taken points. Firstly, Philip Gleeson stroked over his second score with a neat point and then wing back Karl Kirwan, on one of his forays forward, broke a couple of tackles to strike over an excellent point from 40 yards out near the sideline. Newly introduced Shane McBride matched this effort with an equally excellent point from distance following a turnover by Ian Bracken to leave 10 between them. In the dying minutes, both sides swapped goals with Cormac O’Shea capping a good display at full-forward by rounding the keeper with the last act of the game to slot home AGB’s fourth goal meaning at the full time whistle, the scoreboard read AGB 4-10 Barndarrig 2-06.

AGB Senior Ladies  played Castletown at home in Pearses’ Park in a friendly challenge.  The final score being 11:14 to 2:7 giving AGB a win.
