Carnew notes week May 30th

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family and relatives of Helen Brennan, nee Kelly Main Street, Carnew  who died during the week, her remains were removed to Carnew on Saturday morning for 11am mass and burial took place in Tomacork cemetery.

The winner of Scoil Aodan Naofa Split the Pot was Adam Kavanagh winning €250 and the seller prize was won by Adam, the next draw is Thursday 2nd June, thanks to everyone for their support.


On Sunday June 5 the walk is at Kirikee, Glenmalure (Grade C 10k, 2.5 hours). Meeting in Tinahely 10.00 or Glenmalure at 10.45.

On Sunday June 12 the walk is at Djouce (Grade B 12k, 3 hours). Meeting in Tinahely 10.00 or Roundwood at 10.45.

Please ensure to wear proper walking boots, to bring adequate food & drink and to pack (or wear) rain gear.

In aid of Chifundo Foundation to benefit children of Zomba, Malawi

Local woman Ellie Kavanagh is volunteering with the Chifundo Foundation in Malawi this August to help with their Summer Education Programme.

Chifundo is an Irish charitable organisation which works with some of the most underprivileged children in Zomba, Malawi, providing them with the education and support they need to break the cycle of poverty within their community.

Carnew Emmets GAA are hosting a fundraising Barn Dance on Saturday June 4th, the Bank Holiday weekend, in Mick Kenny’s barn. The theme of the event is the 1916 Rising so please do come in your 1916 costumes and paraphernalia!
Music on the night will be by Jorum so a really good session is guaranteed. The Barn Dance is preceded by a night of Irish Music in the main lounge of Kenny’s which promises to be most enjoyable.
Admission will be by ticket only and, since there will only be a limited number available, buy your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Carnew and District Agricultural Show will take place on Saturday 16th July in Umrigar by kind permission. There will be the usual classes for show horses, ridden hunter, working horse, with many qualifiers, in mare and foal and young stock, many classes for ponies including classes for the family pony with lots of prizes, rosettes and fun for all. A large variety of sheep classes for pedigree breeds and commercial stock, dog show, indoor section, baking , craft, flowers and junior section. Schedule of events will soon be available.

The next social dance in Askamore is on Friday 3rd June with music by T-Bone Country, from 9.30
