Katie one win away from Rio

Katie Taylor moved a step closer to a berth at this summer’s Olympic Games with a comprehensive victory at the World Championships in Kazakhstan this afternoon.

The Bray fighter was pitted against Argentine Dayana Sanchez in Astana in the round of 16, and Taylor dominated the early exchanges to set up a triumph by unanimous decision.

With places on offer to all four semi-finalists this week, the defending lightweight Olympic champion is now just one win away from securing her place at the Rio Games in August.

Taylor will now face Mexican Victoria Torres, who had a similarly convincing victory over Dane Yvonne Rasmussen, tomorrow afternoon.

Taylor’s win makes it three Irish women in the last eight, with Kelly Harrington and Grainne Walsh also in quarter-final action tomorrow.

Harrington earned a unanimous decision over German Cindy Rogge this morning and will face home fighter Zarina Tsoloyeva, who had a surprise victory over Italian top seed Valentina Alberti in the light-welterweight division.

Walsh takes on another local fighter in welterweight category in the form of Valentina Khalzova.
