Over eighty five enthusiastic dancers came in great style to celebrate Bealtaine with The Wicklow Man Sunday last. This year we had two young people dancing who regularly compete in ballroom competitions. With sandwiches, cakes, a mega raffle and three hour dancing they left looking forward to the next tea dance. A big thank you to all the generous people who brought raffle prizes along. Stanislaw Jerzy Lec once said, ‘Youth is the gift of nature, but age is a work of art’.

Brockagh Resource Centre on Friday 13th May hosted Co. Wicklow Network for Older People AGM attended by over 180 people from all over Wicklow with guest speakers, National President of Active Retirement Ireland Mai Quaid and our own local TD’s Pat Casey & Andrew Doyle and John Brady.  The morning started with election of officers for the coming year, and a presentation from Pat Doherty from Age Friendly Wicklow.  Pat spoke about changing demographics in Ireland and Wicklow while finding the voice of older people, responding to the programme for the government, National Positive Ageing Strategy.  Providing a vehicle for multi-agency engagement that includes older people in the process and a commitment to make County Wicklow a great place in which to live and grow old in. Later in the morning the event continued with questions to the TDs from the floor followed by lunch and dancing with the Wicklow Man. All groups and individuals who had an interest in promoting and participating in activities that enhance the life of Older People County Wicklow were encouraged to attend.

A number of local people have joined the 8 week Go for Life course. When qualified the PALs can lead their local groups in things like short exercise routines, fun games, simple dances and sports like pitch ad toss.  The aid of the PALS is to empower and enable older people to plan and lead physical activity sessions and to show groups how to get more active, keep healthy and stay safe while having fun.  If you are interested in becoming a PALs leader please contact Pauline on 0404-45600.
