Don’t miss the excitement of the Round Ireland Sailfest which returns to Wicklow Town on the 17th, 18th and 19th June to coincide with the Round Ireland Yacht Race. The Round Ireland Yacht Race is held every second year, and is Ireland’s premier offshore yacht race. This major sailing event attracts yachts and crews from around the world. This year, over 60 boats will be taking part making it the biggest Round Ireland Yacht Race ever.
An added dimension of the Round Ireland Sailfest this year, is The Taste of Wicklow, which this year features Neven Maguire, Derry Clarke, Paul Clarke, Rory Morahan and a host of local chefs with music and entertainment. It is truly a family friendly festival.
Last year’s Taste of Wicklow drew an attendance of thousands and established The Taste of Wicklow as the biggest food festival on the East Coast of Ireland. From start to finish, the weekend is packed full of family fun. There is a fantastic level of family based events which are completely free of charge. The combined events of The Round Ireland Sailfest/Taste of Wicklow have put Wicklow Town firmly on the map.
The Round Ireland Sailfest will open on the evening of Friday 17th June with a programme of entertainment based around the marquee which will be located at Wicklow Sailing Club. It will be a truly Celtic night with traditional Irish music, and the well known locally based high profile band ‘Perfect Friction’ to entertain our international sailing crews, visitors and the local community. The evening will conclude with a fantastic fireworks display.
On Saturday, the family fun day at the Black Castle will include face painters, children’s games, puppet shows, magicians, an adventure climbing wall, a vintage car display and a host of other activities with a live music band to entertain all the adults and family members. The Round Ireland Yacht race will commence at 2pm and will be followed by a spectacular air display by one of Ireland’s leading stunt pilots.
For music lovers on Saturday night, there will be a great outdoor concert with another high profile band to be confirmed this week. It is building up to be a music night not to be missed.
However, as always, it costs considerable money to fund and organise these flagship events. All of the events for the weekend are completely free of charge and is being promoted by Wicklow Town & District Chamber of Commerce. The dedicated organising committee have come up with a very novel fundraising raffle. Each €10 ticket sold will entitle the purchaser to free entry to The Taste of Wicklow and an opportunity to win a cash prize of €2000, two All-Ireland Football Final tickets with an overnight stay and a host of ten other valuable prizes. Tickets are available from the Chamber of Commerce office, Chamber Members and a selection of retail shops in Wicklow Town.
The sale of these tickets together with a small level of local sponsorship is the only source of funding available for what promises to be a fantastic weekend for all of us living in Wicklow Town and for the many tourists that it will bring to Wicklow Town.
