Sit in protest at Bray Municipal offices

Bray municipal offices has been closed this morning as two men have have staged a sit in protest.

Speaking to Wicklownews People before profit’s  Anna Doyle said “The group were supporting two men who had lost home due to the closure of emergency homeless accommodation in Bray.”

Wicklow County Council issued a statement on Friday.

Wicklow County Council is continuing to move away from the model of providing emergency homeless accommodation from large units, towards a best practice Housing First model.  This involves a number of different approaches including the use of smaller units with visiting support for up to 3-4 clients per house as well as securing units supplied from voluntary housing bodies, the private rented sector, and by the local authority directly for people at risk of homelessness.

Accordingly, the planned closure of No 3 Brighton Terrace, Bray took place on 1st April 2016.  In terms of alternative accommodation for the residents of Brighton Terrace, 7 persons were accommodated by a combination of measures which included Private Rented accommodation, transitional accommodation with visiting support by Dublin Simon, and other temporary accommodation. Engagement and support with other service users continues to be provided by the Council’s Homeless Team.

The Council’s Homeless Outreach Officer meets individuals and offers advice and support. During these clinics the welcome addition of the Inhouse Simon Support Worker has facilitated the on-going support for individuals presenting to County Buildings.

Other initiatives by Wicklow County Council to combat homelessness, with a specific emphasis on Bray include:

  • Securing of Capital Assistance Scheme funding by Ark Housing to purchase two three bed units in Bray  – these units are allocated to families ‘at risk of homelessness’ in the Bray area
  • Wicklow County Council has entered into a licence agreement with the Dublin Simon Community for the use of a four bed ground floor unit as a Housing First supported temporary accommodation facility for people moving on from homelessness.
  • Funding of €40,000 to Sa Bhaile to enable this group continue its valuable work in terms of securing accommodation for people at risk of homelessness in the Bray area and its environs.

With regard to the incident at Bray Municipal District, Wicklow County Council cannot comment on individual cases.
