Paul Barry RIP – Remembering a force of nature
The death has occurred of Paul Barry ,father of Alannah ,who plays with our Under 16 Camogie and Ladies Football teams.
Paul’s son Evan plays with the Under 14s. Adam also played for Bray Emmets.
We would like to express our sympathy to Chris, Alannah, Adam and Evan on this sad occasion.
How can you describe the force of nature that husband, father, son and friend Paul Barry was to such a wide circle or people?
He was neither concert pianist nor footballing great – he was instead just about the most pleasant soul God ever put on this earth.
Paul worked hard in life – it was his first commandment. It meant he could provide for his family but unlike most of us he worked long and hard hours with a smile on his face.
That’s the thing about Paul I’ll always remember – his greetings. They were never less than sincere and always followed up with a genuine question about how you were doing.
His untimely death leaves Chrissie without a great husband and partner and children Adam, Alannah and Evan without a dad in a million.
At his funeral in Queen of Peace this week, you saw how the loss affected his large circle of family and people like myself who got to know him in my case firstly in Dublin city and later in McDaniels and Dundrum.
It was while working in the latter that I called in to see him in Ryan’s pub in May only to be told he wasn’t well. That was one shock; news of his death was an even greater blow.
Paul though is one of the most resourceful people I ever met – nothing was ever too much for him.
I know from above he’s already helping his family and the rest of us because great human spirits like Paul never die – they just find different ways to come to our aid.
His family are an integral part of the Bray Emmets community and there is no better people in situations such as now to rally round them.
Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Bray Emmets: 1-15 – St Judes: 0-15
Bray v St Judes at home on Monday 18th July 2016. We needed a win in this one if we were to keep our hopes of promotion alive from this Division. It was Judes that started well despite a great point from Karl Lacey from the throw in. Colm Manning the St Judes centre forward, was on fire with three long range points, one after another and Colm O’Callaghan at corner forward banging over two more, one from play and the other from a free, we found ourselves 7 points to 2 down with 20 minutes gone on the clock, points from Padge Doyle, Enda Forde and Cian O’Byrne gave us a fighting chance. Leo Sexton at centre back for the Templeogue boys was having a stormier, along with Mark Hannon at number 10 who kept the score board ticking for them. John Henderson and Cathal O’Dualachain were sprung from the bench with five to go before half time and straight away Hendo carved out a goal chance, with the goalie saving for a 65, which Christy pointed, The Judes boys were guilty of a large number of wides in this half and we could have been facing a bigger deficit at the break but instead we were only three points down after playing against the wind, 10 to 7. The second half saw a big improvement in our boys and seemed to get their composure after the break, and with the breeze in our backs, went about reducing the deficit, and so it was, points from Christy, Ciano and a great goal from Hendo, followed by point from centre of the field, left us with our tails up and leading by 4 points. Judes hit back with three points on the trot, making it a one point game, Liam Benville replaced Jim Doyle and Conor Doherty for Karl, we now had a cracking game of hurling with the excitement building, who could keep their nerve and take the points, up stepped Mark Lennon and landed an absolute monster from well inside his own half, two points up and a small bit of day light again, next up Liam Benville after butchering two chances previous, redeemed himself with a cracker, three up, moments later Liam Kenny after doing all the hard work, rounding the entire Judes defence blasted against the keeper and cleared, back came the Judes boys, another point from Mark Hannon reduced it to two before Christy finished and ended with a free in front of the goal, a big turn out from our lads which is always great but hard to give everyone a game, Judes battled hard right to the end and were it not for a fine save from Peter O’Reilly in the Bray goal right at the end, could have snatched a draw. The final score 1.15 to 15, two big games coming up Senior hurling this Friday night in Greystones 8 pm and Monday night in Arklow for the intermediates at 7.30, see you all there and thanks for all the support last night.

Bray Emmets: 5-07 – Carnew: 3-11
On the road again to Arklow , and this time it was Carnew, with two wins and a draw we look good for a semi-final spot again this year. As defending champions every match gets harder as other teams raise their game and set themselves targets, and beating us would certainly give them a fair idea of where they are in relation to winning the intermediate championship. We faced Carnew in many battles and last night was no different, our boys were well up for it and immediately went about their business, Brian Duggan, Liam Kenny and Michael (Brick) Walsh, causing the Carnew full back line all sorts of problems and Darragh Maloney was doing his normal trouble shooting and dropping back to help out our defence, although Cathal Reddin and Ronan O’Brien appear to be getting better with age gave a great performance on the night. We welcomed back Matt Thomson who had been away farming until all hours of the night and boy did he make his presence felt, giving Michael Collins the Carnew centre back a right roasting. Peter O’Reilly was landing the puck outs down on Matt and he managed to handle most of them, particularly in the second half when the pressure came on. We lead 3.5 to 1.6 at half time, Carnew scoring a goal and a point just before the break, very much keeping them in the game. Goals from Brick Walsh(2) and Duggs, points from Maloney, Lacey, Keating and Kenny who was providing a lot of the donkey work, lead to a good spread of scorers which is always good and we certainly had that in the first half. The second half and Carnew with a slight breeze in their backs, we would appear to have it all to do, Sean Maloney and Paul Barry were solid and although scores were scarce in this half we held our own and it was up to Carnew to come at us and to gain the momentum, Jordan Lee is another man that deserves a mention being his usual hard working and disciplined self, Duggs added his second goal, Benville fired over, Brick Walsh added two more and the score board was ticking over nicely, back came Carnew who had different ideas, Joe Hughes who moved to full forward banged in two goals and it was game on, and right down to the wire. Up pops super sub Conor McNally in an unfamiliar position of corner forward to let fly with a perfect ground stroke to the back of the Carnew net and we are back to three up going into injury time, the pressure was intense but Ciaran Manley finally blew the final whistle, after Dan Nolan had reduced it to two and we held on for a courageous win, the final score 5.7 to 3.11, well done to all.

Bray Emmets: 1-15 – St Pat’s: 0-15 22nd July 2016.
A handy journey over the road to Greystones to play St Pat’s and hopefully take up where we left off against Avondale the previous week. This was a game that we could easily take for granted so it was important to knuckle down from the start and get the job done. We started well, Mark Lennon firing over two points with two minutes on the clock, Christy Moorehouse was moving well and causing, Gerry Connors a lot of problems early on. However Pat’s settled things down, Andy O’Brien converted a few frees to get them up and running, we were cruising along for periods of this half but we were guilty of letting the opposition back into the game once again, were it not for a fantastic double save by Peter O’Reilly from an AO’B penalty, our advantage at the break would have been far less, going in 9 points to 5 up which flattered us really. Points from Eoin McCormack, Arran Murphy and five from Christy, two from play and three frees all helped to keep us in control. The second half would need a big improvement to see this one out, with Mikey Lee coming on for Ben McCormack and immediately firing over two points we looked good for the win, unfortunately we seem flat on the night and although we did get what we came for, the two points, we were made look very ordinary and will need serious work before we take on Glenealy in the decider, St Pat’s pushed us all the way and kept fighting back just when you thought we had them bet, Christy scored a great goal which did give us some breathing space but back came Pat’s with Georgie O’Brien firing over three points to cancel out the goal. Masterson pointed a long range free, added to by Eoin and Christy finished it off with a few frees. The final score 1.15 to 15 and while I don’t think we looked like losing this one, were grateful to come away with the win and not very convincing. One would have to say there is a small number of things that need to be put right, number one being the free taking which has been very suspect in the last few matches, our team work and link-up play has slipped a little, this may be just part of the journey but none the less, three in a row is not an easy thing to achieve , so you can’t take any teams lightly. The footballers are out this Saturday and need our support, and then I think the Glenealy game is the 5th Aug, look forward to seeing ye all there.
