Sex, greed, violence, and a family at war: John B. Keane’s ‘Big Maggie’ in Tinahely Community Hall

Tinahely Variety and Drama Group will present John B. Keane’s powerful and darkly comic drama, Big Maggie in Tinahely Community Hall with performances nightly at 8.00pm from Wednesday, October 19 to Saturday, October 22.

Set in 1960’s rural Ireland the play is a striking commentary on changing society of the time which raises questions about land, inheritance,  and sexuality that echo to the present day.  John B.Keane penetrates the dark heart of a family at war, tearing itself apart as we watch no-nonsense matriarch, Maggie Polpin strive to take the reins of the family business and farm in the wake of her husband, Walter’s death.  Maggie’s new-found control over her life, and her dogged belief that she is acting for her children’s  own good, sets her at odds with her off-spring, driving them one by one from her.

This production of Big Maggie, directed by Eddie McGlynn features an entirely amateur cast who have been rehearsing tirelessly since the beginning of August.  While faithful to John B. Keane’s powerful melodrama and canny dialogue, this performance by Tinahely Variety and Drama Group will feature some new elements that audiences will appreciate.

Admission is €10 and booking is essential.  Bookings and further details can be had by telephoning:  087 3583384.
