Former students, friends and teachers are in mourning today at the sudden death of former Abbey Community College principal Tommy Tyrrell.

Tommy died suddenly on Sunday.

Former student Sarahmarie Howes wrote “Woke up to see on Facebook that Mr.Tyrell has passed away..very sad!! RIP Sir thanks for all the work you put into us in the Abbey.. always very fair and a well respected man, condolences to his family, friends and colleagues x”

“As a mark of respect of Mr Tyrrell we are laying flowers outside the old Abbey school as Mr Tyrrell was principal, teacher and friend.”

Photographer Michael Kelly said “Tommy was always thinking of the welfare of his students and would call me and say Mike if your going by the school would you drop in, I need a favour, Tommy would have spotted a student who was down on self esteem and would need a bit of cheering up and ask would there by any chance of getting a picture at an event in the school and make sure they were in the paper to give them a boost. That summed up the kind of man Tommy was although he hated to be in pictures himself. He was a very good friend, he made a presentation to me at the final Bar-b-que before the school closed as a mark of the work we had done together.”
