Man jailed for four years after friend died in car crash

A Shillelagh man has been sentenced to 4 years in prison in relation to a drink driving incident in which his friend was killed.

Russell Hickey with an address at Deerpark, Shillelagh pleaded guilty to three charges in relation to the crash that killed Wanye Twamley.

The crash happened in the early hours of May 11, 2014 on the R725 at Croneyhorn.

Counsel for the DPP told the court that Hickey fled in the immediate aftermath of the crash to his nearby home, Mr Twamley was thrown from the car’s rear window and he died at the scene.

He later returned and set fire to his vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf.

Hickey was sentenced to four years in prison, with the final 18 months suspended.
