The ECCE (Early Childhood Care and Education) scheme, often referred to as ‘the free pre-school year’ has been in place since 2010 and has been widely praised for its role in enhancing children’s development and outcomes. The scheme has been extremely popular; with in excess of 95% of all children availing of their place.
In the recent Budget, the scheme was expanded, meaning that children who have turned three can join the scheme (in September, January and April) and in some cases remain on the scheme until they are five and a half.
The expansion of the scheme has seen the number of children participating almost double and is expected to increase the average school starting age to a minimum of 4 years 9 months or older, which is in line with best practice.

There are sufficient places for every child to attend ECCE. However, Wicklow County Childcare recommends that in order to secure the time slot (AM or PM) and space in your preferred pre-school parents should make contact with a pre-school to book a place as soon as possible for the September 2017 enrolment to avoid disappointment.
