Whitmore urges people to support small independent shops in Tesco centres

Social Democrats Cllr. Jennifer Whitmore has praised the support that the local community have given to the striking Tesco workers in Bray and Greystones but has asked that people make a special effort to remember those small independent retailers that are located in the shopping centres alongside Tesco.

Whitmore said “I was very heartened by the support I saw being given to the Tesco workers this week in Bray and Greystones. Hopefully, Tesco will resolve this issue quickly and let those staff, that have been loyal to them for years, get back to work. Unfortunately though, the only location the strikers have been able to picket is the entrance to the car parks and this means that people have to technically cross the picket line to get into the other stores onsite.

“I know that this is a very difficult thing for people to do, and that it goes against the grain for many, but I would just like to let people know that the Tesco workers are very supportive of those little shops and if you just tell them as you pass that you are going into the other shops, they are very understanding.

“Some shops in these centres have seen an 80 per cent reduction in their business since the strike began, and have had to tell some staff to stay at home. So I would ask that people make an extra special effort until the strike is resolved to support those small shops that share the store with Tesco.”
