Man found guilty of murder for second time

Gareth Farrell of East Coast FM News reports a Wicklow man who had claimed he had acted in self defence when he killed a friend in Delgany almost 7 years ago, has been convicted of his murder for a second time.

In 2011, – 29 year old Thomas O’Connor of Burnaby Court Greystones, – was convicted of murdering 22 year old John O’Brien,-on the Farrankelly Road, in Delgany- on the 5th of June in 2010. A post mortem found the victim had died after a ‘catastrophic brain injury’ as a result of blunt force trauma.

Mister O’Connor appealed the conviction in 2014 – and the original verdict was quashed and a retrial was ordered.  The accused had pled not guilty of murder – but guilty to manslaughter.

However after a nine day retrial, the jury returned with a murder verdict.  The accused was remanded in custody for sentencing on the 22nd of March, when a mandatory life sentence will be imposed.
