Rathdrum Tidy Towns are organising their first Walking Festival in the beautiful surrounds of Rathdrum.
This will take place on the weekend of 24th,25th and 26th of March.
There is a night walk on 24th around the grounds of Avondale forest park. Registration at 6.30 in the lodge inside the main gate. Walk at 7.00 sharp. Refreshments afterwards in the lodge. €10 entry head torch required.
There are 2 walks on each of the other days and these will all be guided. There are varying distances for all levels of ability. €20 for one walk or all walks and each participant will receive a Rathdrum Rambles guide which has many interesting details about the area including historical and natural facts.
Registration will take place at Rathdrum Boys National School at 10.00 and the walks will proceed from here.
On Saturday night there will be a music session in Mileys pub, Brewey Place. Rathdrum is ideally suited for a festival of this kind as there are many natural walkways and trails in the area and is a valuable asset to the community.
It is a great way for people, local and visitors, to discover aspects of heritage that may get overlooked in day to day life. Rathdrum has a rich history and this walking festival will be an opportunity to discover our natural flora and fauna that abound in the area.
Rathdrum Tidy Towns aims to promote the natural resources of the area and hope that this can be done through this event. The accessibility of the area by public transport and the range of accommodations available in the environs should make this a very enticing event for both the serious, experienced walker and those who like a weekend walk with family and friends in a beautiful natural environment.
