Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney club notes week April 10th

Arklow Geraldines Ballymoney

AGBs Senior Men faced Barndarrig on Saturday evening at home in Pearses’ Park in glorious sunshine.  The fine evening had brought the supporters out in their plenty and AGBs Men were in flying form.  From the very first throw in, through to the half time whistle AGB dominated the field.  Their power and presence was seen in all positions as the rarely relented to a tough Barndarrig side.  The home team never quite let Barndarrig in on the match and the half time score of 1-12 to 0-00, following a powerful goal from Philip Healy along with some great scores from the team,  was a credit to the football and skill that was on display from the AGB men.  The second half opened up to another great display from AGB, all players appearing strong and fit as they passed the ball quickly down the field.  Continued scores from the team and three more goals from Ciaran Hyland(1), and Cormac O Shea (2), spurred the AGB men on and they only slipped once to allow Barndarrig score a point.  The final whistle blew an end to a great game for AGB and a disappointing finish for Barndarrig where AGB finished 4-18 to 0-01.An ending which gives a promising hint of what lies ahead this season within this strong AGB team. AGB wish Martin Hamilton and his team all the best as they continue their league journey.

In Juvinelle Football, the U7/U9 Boys hosted their first home blitz of the season on Friday night. A great evening of fun and games was had in Pearses’ Park where they boys welcomed their visiting teams.  Tea and sandwiches were served by the hard working mammy’s and a chance to review the matches was taken by all. The U13 Boys welcomed St. Marys to Ballymoney on Friday evening and had a very successful night where they finished 8-06 to 2.04.  Great sportsmanship was seen from this ever developing young squad.  The U11 Boys welcomed St. Pats on Wednesday night and a fine display of football was on show from both the AGB teams.  Unfortunately it was St. Pats night in both games but the prospects of this U11 team is very high and to see them enjoy their football is a credit to them.  The Minor Men were out against Bray on Monday evening where they were defeated 1-06 to 2-09 in a tough match which pushed the minors throught their paces The team appeared strong and confident. The U11 Boys teams are out this Wednesday night where they face Rathnew in Pearses Park at 6.45pm while the U15 Boys travel to Rathenew to take them on at 7pm. Best wishes to all our teams!

AGB U10 Ladies had their first outing of the 2017 season as they travelled to Ballinakill to compete in the opening blitz of the season. The girls had a very enjoyable day in beautiful sunshine as they took on teams from Ashford, Baltinglass, AnTóchar, Blessington, Bray and Wicklow. The U10s fielded two teams and each got three games so well done to the organisers and officials in Ballinakill for providing the opportunity for these youngsters to show off the skills they have been developing over the last number of weeks. Well done to all the young players for a wonderful display of talent and sportsmanship. Well done to the mentors, administrators, parents and all who supported this
worthwhile event. The U10s continue to train on Saturdays at Pearses’ Park from 11.15am-12.15pm. Any girls born in 2007 and 2008 are welcome to join this group. Enquiries to 087 6770254
AGB U12 ladies have been extremely busy with three games in as many weeks. They had some really valuable challenge games against Castletown and Kilanerin. We are very grateful to our good friends and neighbours in Wexford for the valuable links we have forged down through the
years and the amount of development and learning that has resulted from those contacts. Good luck to all the North Wexford clubs as their 2017 season gets off to a busy start also. The Arklow girls opened their league campaign with an away game to St. Patrick’s of Wicklow and after a slow opening half the girls got going and chalked up 2-2 for the game. However it wasn’t enough to catch their opponents as they managed to score 3-5. AGB take on Tinahely onTuesday April 11 th when they will have another opportunity to put their training and skills to the test. Training for u12s is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. AGB U14 ladies travelled to Ballinakill with a panel of 27 girls on Saturday 1st of April and were in a tough group for Féile 2017. In the first game the girls faced a very strong Tinahely team and though playing with the aid of the wind in the opening half it was Tinahely that got off to the better start scoring a goal and three points early on and finishing the half with a second goal. AGB defended stoutly in the 2nd half and held Tinahely to 3 points while also breaking up field on a few occasions but were unable to convert any chances created.  In the second match the girls took on Blessington who had won their first match. With a few changes in the team AGB took a while to settle and were a little unfortunate to be 1-1 to 0-1 down at half time despite some excellent defending and a great performance by the goalkeeper. In the second half the AGB attack got going but couldn’t get the all important goal with the final score 1-2 to 0-3 in favour of Blessington. The final match saw the Arklow girls take on Baltinglass and a great goal by Lucy Kindlon gave AGB a 1-1 to 0-1 half-time lead. The second half was a very tight affair with a late goal from Baltinglass almost drawing them level but two further points for AGB meant they held out to win 1-3to 1-1.
Sincere thanks to the wonderful admin Marina for all her help on Féile day and always, to the managers and mentors for all their hard work and to all those who supported AGB U14 ladies in Ballinakill. Well done to all the organisers and officials for a great fun day out that was enjoyed by all involved. Finally and especially well done to all the girls, from 1 to 27 you gave a 100% and never gave up!Go AGB Ladies!
U14s train on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Enquiries to 086 2230611.
The two AGB U16 ladies teams kicked off their respective league campaigns on Tuesday April 4 th 2017 with both enjoying home advantage for the opening games. At Pearses’ Park the ladies got their Div 1 campaign up and running as they took on Bray Emmets. The girls have been training hard since February and were looking forward to their first game of the season. They were not disappointed as they came away with a convincing win.
And so to AGB’s second team that took to the field simultaneously in Ballymoney against Clanna Gael. Unsure of what to expect from this newly combined club, the AGB girls again got off the mark quickly and were immediately on the attack in what turned out to be a cracker of a game. It was nip and tuck throughout the sixty minutes and the result was in the balance right up to the final whistle. AGB were again successful and took the honours with a very strong closing quarter.
U16s train Tuesdays and Fridays. Enquiries to 087 6200318.
AGB Junior ladies got their first league game under their belt on Sunday 9 th April 2017 away to Enniskerry at 11am. This was a very sporting encounter as a very young Arklow side took to the field in what was, for many of them, their first foray into adult football. The girls looked sharp as they really took the game to the more experienced Enniskerry side and what they lacked in guile they made up for in sheer hard work. The girls lost this one on a very respectable score line of 1-6 to 1-11 but the learning involved was immense for all concerned. Adult football training for ladies is on Tuesday and Fridays and with three adult teams there is plenty of football for all levels of ability. We welcome returning players so if you have drifted away don’t be shy about coming along again to enjoy all the benefits of ladies Gaelic football. Enquiries to 087 9280338.
