Arklow blooms for 2017

Hanging-Baskets

Arklow Main Street is blooming – thanks to the Flower Basket Scheme for businesses introduced by the Arklow Town Team.

Research has shown that this type of scheme can bring many social and environmental benefits to a town.   The project is being supported by Arklow Municipal District (AMD).

For a contribution of €35 per basket participants in the scheme received:

  • A fully planted 16” flower basket (with plant food and water crystals)
  • Wall bracket mounted on building by AMD staff
  • Watering of baskets during the period June to September, five times per week for 16 weeks, (three times by a contractor engaged by AMD and two times by  Arklow Tidy Towns).  However, businesses are requested to supplement watering too.

Baskets were erected the first week in June and will be collected at the end of September for reuse in 2018.    The aim is to enhance and improve the image of Arklow’s Main Street (Wexford Road to Ferrybank),

The Arklow Town Team has been overwhelmed with the response to this initiative, in excess of 170 baskets have been ordered and supplied.

Businesses on the outskirts of the town have also come on board by sponsoring baskets for unoccupied buildings and public areas of the town.  These businesses include Leon Recycling Ltd, Arklow Marine Services, ASL, Servier, Arklow Bay Hotel, Rondo Food Ireland Ltd and Cllr Pat Fitzgerald.

The Town Team would like to acknowledge the assistance and support received from Cappagh Nurseries in Aughrim who provided the baskets; AMD staff who erected the brackets and the flower baskets; Arklow Tidy Towns and Arklow Jetting & Drain Maintenance who will be looking after the watering of the baskets throughout the summer.

Arklow Municipal District has also installed 10 tiered planters around the town which have been designed and planted by AMD staff.  Arklow Municipal District would like to acknowledge the sponsorship received from Virgin Media for four of these planters.  It is hoped to increase the number of these planters to twenty for the summer of 2018.

Once again thank you from the town team for helping to make Arklow Bloom for 2017.
