Cododerjo is a global network of free computer programming clubs for young people. It was founded in 2013 by James Whelton a 22-year-old tech entrepreneur from Cork and Bill Liao, an Australian entrepreneur now based in Cork.
Dunlavin CoderDojo was established in 2014. It currently has 45 members (Ninjas) ranging from ages 7-14. 18 of the Ninjas had an opportunity to showcase their projects at the “Coolest Projects” exhibition in the RDS on Saturday the 17th of June. 17 countries and over 600 projects were represented.
Projects from Dunlavin included Robotics, Sensor technology, websites, apps, games and multimedia. Subjects ranged from conservation of Bees, the rain forest, race cars, athletics and history to name but a few. Of the 60 awards up for grabs 3 were awarded to the Dunlavin Dojo Ninjas, a formidable achievement:
Amy Cunningham won 2 runner up prizes in the Intel Hardware and Future Maker categories, with her Raspberry Pi project for her live monitoring system for beehives.
Josh Humphries won runner up for his HTML project which allows students to learn History for Junior Cert, his second year in a row to pick up an award.
The Ninjas all faced new and exciting experiences at the exhibition, many had never presented before, explaining projects to the judges and some even ventured up to the main stage for their 15 minutes of fame. It is a privilege to introduce our Ninjas in Dunlavin to the world of possibilities that technology can bring.
All thanks to the great Dojo team Kay Grattan (Dojo Champion) and our mentors Malvina Walsh, Colin Judge, Joanne Grattan, Madeline Timmins, Josh Humphries and Amy Cunningham. Also to mentors Ulug Toprak, John Keatley, Bradley Nolan and all the fantastic parents who bring their skills and encouragement during the year. A huge thank you to Scoil Nioclas Naofa who facilitate our Dojo every week.
We are seeking new mentors for next year SEPT 2017 to assist us in teaching our enthusiastic Ninjas. If you are interested please contact us on our Facebook Dunlavin Coderdojo or Twitter @dojoDunlavin.
Looking forward to the year ahead.
