The recently completed footpath which now links Rathdrum to Avondale was officially opened and blessed on Friday last (9th June).
The installation of this 1.35km stretch of footpath has been carried out in stages over the last 12 months and funded by public and private donations. This stretch of footpath will be used by many tourists and children from the local schools visiting Avondale House giving them a safe, accessible way to benefit from the fantastic resource that Avondale is.
The Cathaoirleach of Arklow Municipal District, Cllr Pat Kennedy, said: “Linking Avondale and Rathdrum by something as simple as a footpath creates a link that will help our town flourish. There is a potential for hundreds of thousands of visitors to Avondale each year once the proposed redevelopment of Avondale takes place which will allow Rathdrum to benefit in a real economic way. Residents in this town have been looking for this footpath for many years and it will now provide safe connectivity from Rathdrum to Avondale to locals as well as tourists”.
He also thanked the landowners involved who supported the project, private donors who recognized and acknowledged the importance of this footpath to the future growth of Rathdrum, the contractor for his excellent workmanship, the residents who live along the road for their assistance and patience throughout the works and his fellow Councillors who agreed to allocate funding to commence this project.
The Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Pat Fitzgerald, stated that he was delighted to see the completion of this footpath take place and complimented the contractor and staff of Arklow Municipal District and Wicklow County Council who were involved in the project.
