Council ordered to remove up to 2.4m tons of soil waste from dump

A High Court judge has ordered Wicklow County Council to clean up an illegal dump at Whitestown in west Wicklow within three years.

Justice Richard Humphreys made the order today, it is understood there is an estimated 2.4 million tonnes to be removed which includes contaminated soil and hospital waste.

The ultimate destination of the illegal waste and contaminated soil remains as yet unknown.

The dump which operated from the 1980’s to 2002 was used by private contractors as well as the County Council.

The cost of removing the contaminated soil is set to run into tens of millions of Euros.
