The game between Arklow United and Greystones at Ferndale Park on the Cemetery Road was halted in the 75th minute after a Greystones player suffered a broken ankle.

It is understood the nearest ambulance available from Baltinglass was diverted to another emergency, so it was decided the quickest way to get the player to hospital was by helicopter.

While the Arklow Ambulance Crew had just left town 15 minutes previous, transporting another emergency patient to hospital.

A local first aid responder and the Wicklow Rapid Response tended to the patient until Air Corp paramedic arrived at the scene.
