Alan Hegarty, owner of the Fishman in Wicklow Town, is celebrating two years of business tonight with a 7-course tasting menu for ticket holders.
“It’s been amazing,” Alan says. “I started off in a fish van, going door to door, then I opened the fish shop. Then we opened the restaurant after that and it’s been a fantastic success.”
Though Alan was hopeful, he never thought the business would be going this long. However, he saw the need for a good seafood restaurant in the town.
The restaurant currently employs 14 people full-time, and to Alan, “for a small little operation it’s going really well for us.”
“It was a no-brainer to start the restaurant. But I’ve been amazed at the support we’ve gotten. We must be doing something right!”
Across from the restaurant, the walls are painted showing the history of Wicklow Town. “We’re hoping to attract people and make Wicklow a destination,” he says, “get more restaurants and more people involved.”
While Alan is looking forward to the celebrations, with a laugh he says, “Sammy’s not getting in because he doesn’t have a reservation.”
Sammy the Seal is attracting the attention of a great many people, including TG4 who are making a show about tourist destinations. Alan says he put the Fishman’s name into the hat, “but they’re really interested in Sammy.”
Alan and his wife Liz would like to thank all the customers that support the Fishman, “from the time I knocked on their door to now. It’s still the same customers.”
They would also like to thank Head Chef Tomasz Wrobel, second in command Martina Crinion, and all the team at the Fishman.
