‘Recording Wicklow’s Prehistoric Rock Art’ by Clíodhna Ní Lionáin
Prehistoric rock art consists of abstract and geometric designs carved into rock surfaces, such as boulders or outcrops. It is difficult to date, but it may be from as early as the Middle Neolithic, more than 5000 years ago. It is found along the Atlantic coastline of Europe, in north-west Iberia, northern Britain, and in various parts of Ireland, including Wicklow. Dr. Ní Lionáin has been involved with the Wicklow Rock Art Project since 2012. It was set up by the School of Archaeology, UCD, to explore ways of recording rock art and protecting it.
