Wicklow TD and Minister of State, Andrew Doyle has announced that over €1.7 million in funding will benefit sports organisations across Wicklow over the coming year.
The successful applications under the Sports Capital Grants were announced by Mr Doyle, who said: “I am delighted to see this much needed funding going to the places it will really make a big difference; our local sports clubs and organisations.”
He added that the funding will benefit nearly 60 organisations around the county. “Active engagement in sports not only helps keep young people healthy but also builds confidence, independence and promotes team building.”
Mr Doyle noted that the Sports Capital Programme was re-instated by the last Fine Gael government in 2012 after it had been cut by Fianna Fáil in the wake of the economic crash.
Now, however, “it represents an excellent value for money investment. It is crucial we invest in sport and the health of our population, particularly with obesity on the rise.”
“Investing in sport is good for the health of the nation, both literally and economically,” Mr Doyle added.
