Wicklow 63- 18 Swords
In a one sided game the Wicklow Gators extended their winning record to 5-1 and maintained second place in the Dublin girls under 18 Division 2 league. The Gators opened their account with baskets from Roisin Ring, Emma Cruise and Katherine France to lead 6-0.
But Swords came back and with the Gators Alba Galban scoring two baskets the score was 10-7 after a very slow first quarter for the Gators. Defensive pressure was the key in the second quarter as the Gators press turned over the ball several times as Kellie Byrne, Emma Coffey, Sara Tamani, Katie Madden and Ellie Merrigan all forced turnovers to lead to easy scores. As Kellie Byrne and Alba Galban orchestrated the offence the Gators pulled away and stretched their lead to32-10 at half time.
This was due to brilliant rebounding by Roisin Ring, Emma Cruise, Katherine France, Caomhe Mc Grath and Maria Carmen.
The third quarter saw Emma Coffey and Ellie Merrigan make baskets off great drives, splitting the Swords defence wide open. Galban finished out the quarter with a three pointer and the game was over as a contest as the Gators led 43-15.
The final quarter saw the Gators shoot very well from range. Katie Madden dropped a eighteen footer , Alba Galban hit two three pointers and Kellie Byrne hit four points to pull away and finished the game as a contest. Free throws from Caoimhe Mc Grath and Roisin Ring iced the game while Maria Carmen scored the final four points to leave the score 63-18.
It was the defensive pressure of the team which won the game as players stepped up and worked so hard on defence.
