Carnew notes week January 22nd

Community Games:
We are indebted to the huge contribution Tommy Kehoe made to Kilrush/Askamore Community games over the past decade and wish him every success for the future.

Draughts continues every Monday night in Askamore Community Centre 7-8.  Proposed dates for competitions are: Draughts January 27th, Badminton February 17th and Art and Handwriting March 10th.


Sincere sympathy is extended to the family and relatives of Kathleen Murphy, nee Nolan, Ballingate who died last week, her remains were removed to Tomacork on Monday for 2pm followed by burial in adjoining grave yard.

To the family and relatives of Elizabeth (Lizzie ) Cousins, Navan and formely of Carnew who died recently.

To the family and relatives of Robin (Hopper) Jordan, Ballingate and formely of Deerpark who died during the week, his remains were removed to Shillelagh on Friday, followed by burial in adjoining grave yard.


Carnew‘s 9th annual model exhibition will take place on Sunday 4th February in Colaiste Bhride, Carnew from 11am – 5pm with all the usual stalls of model farms, planes, trucks, farm Diorama’s, cars, trains, lego, teas, cakes and tombolla and many more. This year will be the first year of the All Ireland Miniature Steam Engine Rally. Admission is adults €5 children free, contact Richie 0876641878 or Trevor 0872702380. Proceeds this year will go towards the school and  the Back Alley Project, all support is greatly appreciated.

The winner of Scoil Aodan Naofa, Carnew Split the Pot of the 12th January was the Lawerence Family winning €232, congratulations. Tickets only €2 from the school or local shops. Your support is greatly appreciated.


Congratulations to all who have won the GAA Awards for last year but especially  Jody Byrne on the junior B hurling award, Chris Doyle, Coolboy for the handball and Des Burton for the Lifetime Achievement Award, they were presented with their Awards on Saturday night in the Arklow Bay Hotel. Well done to all.


Carnew GAA lotto was not won, numbers were 3,19,22,26, lucky dips were Paul FitzGerald, Brideswell. Colm Osborne. Florrie Bower and Madisyn and Lochlyn Kenny, Tomacork. The next draw is 29th January in McCrea’s and the jackpot is €9,800.

Carnew and District Agricultural Show Society  are holding a table quiz on Friday 2nd February at 8.30pm in Kenny’s Corner House, Carnew, €40 per table of four. Your support would be appreciated.


The next bingo is on 11th and 25th February at 2.30pm in St Bridget’s Hall, Carnew, all welcome.


Aughrim Sheep Breeders are celebrating 50 years, 1968 – 2017 and have launched a book to mark the occasion, the book is on sale from any of the committee or in Victor Young’s, Main Street, Carnewat €15.

Chair and floor yoga with Siobhan Rice will commence from Tuesday January 23rd for 10 weeks. Chair yoga 10am – 11am, floor yoga 11.15 am – 12.15 pm. There will be a small fee for each class. If you would like to attend please contact the Day Centre Carnew on 0539426510 ext 1.

Ballyellis National School Enrolment Forms

Enrolment forms are now available for those wishing to enrol in September 2018.  If you know of anyone wishing to have a child enrolled in Ballyellis please inform them that these forms are now available. Please contact the office on 053 9426159 or email the school on if you wish to have an enrolment form sent out or call into the school to collect form.


“Split the Pot” Ballyellis School  

Ballyellis School is running a new fundraiser called “split the pot” in aid of school funds which has just  started. Envelopes can be obtained from the School or any Parent and Askamore Church after weekend Masses. Draws will take place every Friday morning in Ballyellis School. This is a new and exciting venture for Ballyellis School and best of luck to everyone.



On Jan 28 the walk is at Kaideen. Grade B, 10km, 3 hours. Meeting in Tinahely at 10.00. On Sunday February 4 the walk is at Annagh Hill. Grade B, 9k, 3 hours, meeting at Tinahely 10.00 or The Gap at 10.15. Please ensure to wear proper walking boots, to bring adequate food & drink and to pack (or wear) rain gear.
