The Wicklow Gators under-14 boys recorded their 9th successive win to continue their unbeaten run at the top of the Dublin League by beating Malahide Basketball Club 67-9 on Sunday.
The Gators were quick out of the blocks as early baskets from Gearoid Murphy, Scott Fitzpatrick and Peter Dunne helped Wicklow into an early lead. A strong rebounding performance from Mark Cronin kept Malahide’s score low and the Gators were leading 20-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter started with the same intensity as the first, due to high pressure and great defensive work from Zac Hastie, Adam Tighe and Will Fitzpatrick. Fast breaking from Jack Kinnane and offensive rebounding from Senan Rogan ensured that the Gators pulled away to lead 37-8 at half time.
Mark Cronin opened the scoring in the third quarter with a lovely post play. Padraig Doyle made sure to keep the pressure on the point guard which led to great steals and baskets by Ruairi Jenkinson, Gearoid Murphy and Peter Dunne. Fantastic team defence ensured that Malahide finished the third quarter without scoring.
The Wicklow side did not let up the pressure in the fourth quarter as fast hands from Scott Fitzpatrick led to 4 more points off the fast break. The Gators continued to stretch their lead through baskets from Zac Hastie, Adam Tighe and Peter Dunne. Christophe Oudart finished off the scoring with great shooting from the free throw line.
