The Wicklow Lady Gators u-18 basketball team kicked off 2018 how they ended 2017, beating the Killiney Raiders by a score of 50-23.
The Gators, currently sitting 2nd in the Dublin League behind Malahide, were quick out of the blocks early. Scores from Roisin Ring and Alba Galban, as well as strong rebounding performances from Emma Cruise, Ellie Merrigan, Aoife Dunne and Katherine France, led to the Wicklow side taking a 10-6 lead into the second quarter.
The Gators stretched their lead in the second quarter as Emma Coffey, Katherine France and Alba Galban and a three pointer from Maria Carmen stretched the lead to 20-6. Nine more points from Alba Galban, who would finish the game with 22 points, off of two steals by Sara Tamani left the half time lead at 28-6.
Both teams traded baskets in the third quarter as the Gators spread the load of scoring, with Emma Cruise, Ellie Merrigan, Roisin Ring, Katherine France and Emma Coffey all making baskets to leave the Gators now comfortably ahead 41-17.
The final quarter was, much like the third, another solid defensive showing. Steals from Katie Madden, Caoimhe Mc Grath and Ellie Merrigan all led to easy offensive baskets for the Gators off the fast break.
The Gators finished out the game in a strong way and ran out comfortable winners.
