Gorey Credit Union Ltd. (Soon to become Altura Credit Union Ltd.) held it’s stage of the National Schools Quiz on Friday January 27th, 2018. Twenty-Two Schools took part in the event, with teams travelling down from Roundwood, Rathdrum and Avoca, North from Kilmuckridge and all in between – covering the vast common bond.
With almost 200 Pupils and seating for over 150 Parents/Teachers there was standing room only for spectators as the quiz took place at 7pm in the Gym of Gorey Community School. Chairman Thomas Fitzpatrick welcomed the crowd, Business Development Officer Tom Brennan explained the rules and procedures. The questions started with Quiz Mistress Roseanna O’Sullivan taking the reins. At the halfway point Anne Roche, Finance Manager, took over as Quiz Mistress.
The Under 11s (Competition A) had 10 rounds of 6 questions, with the under 13s (Competition B) having 12 rounds. The winners & Runners up from both competitions will go forward to the Chapter stage in early March. If successful at this stage, the winners could go all the way to the Nationals in the RDS in April. Last year, Gorey Educate Together made it to the Nationals, representing Gorey Credit Union Ltd.
Spectators in the crowd could be seen trying to answer the questions for their own fun as the quiz progressed. After Round 10 the scoreboards were obstructed from public view, to keep the winners of competition A confidential until the end of the proceedings. There were clear winners and runners up in both rounds, so tie-breakers were not necessary. The Winners of Competition A (Under 11s) were Monaseed National School, the team comprised Alex Browne, Evan Lawlor, Keeva Poole & Casey Smith. The Runners up were St. Joseph’s National School (Gorey) teammates were Conor Moore, Colm Grannell, Joe Swords & Diarmuid Cronin.
The Under 13’s was won by Gorey Educate Together, their team was made up of Fionn Ahern, Eva Doran, Ailbhe Flynn & Cormac Flemming. The Runners up were Avoca National School with the team comprising Joe Sinnott, Fiona Daly, Liam Murphy & Brian O’Hara.
Tom Brennan, Business Development Officer, co-ordinated the quiz, and would like to thank Gorey Community School, their GAA Teams who provided volunteers and Staff & Board of Gorey Credit Union who also volunteered to assist on the evening. Of course, high praise & thanks go to the Parents, Teachers & Pupils – without them none of this would be possible. We wish all our four teams the best of luck for the next stage and look forward to doing it all again in 2019.
