MET Eireann have extended the Snow and Ice Status Red Alert to 18.00 on Friday evening.
Blizzard-like conditions will develop in the southeast and south this evening and extend northwards tonight.
Today Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the risk to life presented by the severe weather conditions should not be underestimated by anyone and urged people to stay indoors until the red alert is lifted.
Weather forecasters are are advising people to listen to all warnings and not to go out during the present storm.
A number of traffic incidents were reported by gardai today despite the small amount of traffic that was on Wicklow roads.

The advice during a red weather warning is not to travel. Do not take to the roads as visibility is very poor and expected to deteriorate.
Wind is strengthening in many areas of the south-east, adding to problems with visibility.

Gardaí in Bray advise people to stay away from the seafront due to high winds and falling snow. Roads are also slippery in the Baltinglass and Arklow areas due to snowfall, while some mountain routes are impassable.
