16 year old Dunlavin girl Amy Barrett releases her first single ‘Emilio’ today. ‘Emilio’ first appeared in a live radio performance on East Coast FM in 2015.
“Michael Kelly heard some of my new songs at the time and asked me to play ‘Emilio’ live in the studio on ‘The Morning Show’. I put up a video on YouTube just for family and friends but it took off. I was really surprised. The lyrics are very simple but they seem to be catchy.”
The ‘Emilio’ radio appearance opened up opportunities and secured a number of gigs for Amy including support for Irish acts Ryan O’Shaughnessy (Irish Eurovision singer) and Kolumbus.
It was suggested that she should record ‘Emilio’ and she finally got the chance to get into the studio during her school Transition Year last year.
“I was really fortunate to record two songs with Mark ‘Cappy’ Caplice in Baltinglass. He’s a brilliant producer and incredibly positive and encouraging”.
‘Emilio’ was then mixed by the very talented musician, pianist and producer Cian Sweeney (1000 Beasts).
“I don’t know what to expect. It’s a new experience releasing a song. Some people may love it and others may hate it but that’s fair enough. You have to take a chance and no point having any regrets!”
Amy has been very proud to represent Wicklow in both Scór na nÓg and Community Games Singing competitions and she won an All-Ireland Community Games Gold Singing Medal with her sister Sophie back in 2015.
She is known in Wicklow GAA circles as she regularly sings the National Anthem before County Matches and Club Finals in Aughrim. Amy is also a camogie player for Donard/Glen Senior team and the Wicklow Minor team.
Amy is currently no.3 in the singer/songwriter i-Tunes charts.
