Minister to visit Arklow for milestone announcement

Arklow is set for a ministerial visit this Wednesday 27th June when Denis Naughten TD, Minister for Communications, Climate Change and the Environment arrives for a special reception at Arklow Municipal District Council.

Minister Naughten is expected to be welcomed by town Cathaoirleach Cllr. Miriam Murphy, members of the council and local business people.  During the morning, the Minister will be joined by CEO of Virgin Media Tony Hanway, and it is anticipated he will make a significant announcement regarding Virgin Media’s ongoing Project Lightning Network Expansion in Ireland.

Virgin Media’s Project Lightning is the single biggest private investment in digital infrastructure in Ireland and the UK in more than a decade, delivering ultrafast fibre broadband to an additional 4 million premises across both countries, to reach a total of 17 million homes and businesses. The total investment being made by Virgin Media’s Project Lightning is the equivalent of approximately €3.42 Bn over the term of the programme.

In January of this year, Virgin Media switched on free public Wifi in Arklow, which has benefited shoppers, tourists, students and the general public.   Virgin Media has also been working to expand their network in Arklow, by providing new digital services into the homes of residents.

The event is being organised by the Arklow Town Team and Arklow Municipal District.   Local business representatives will have a fantastic opportunity to hear from guest speaker Lorraine Higgins, incoming CEO for Retail Excellence Ireland.  Afterwards, some of the business success stories of Arklow will be highlighted, during a discussion entitled “A Day in the Life of Arklow”, to be hosted by TV3 and the Arklow Town Team.

The Arklow Town Team was formed last year to encourage more collaboration, communication and co-operation between the local authority and the local community.  The Town Team continue to work to improve the quality of life for people living in Arklow and enhance the attractiveness of the town as a place in which to live, work, visit and invest.
