Arklow Municipal District has been shortlisted in the annual Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards held in conjunction with the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government and sponsored by LGiU Ireland.
The awards are organised to recognise and celebrate the outstanding work being carried out by Local Authorities all over Ireland.
The nomination comes under a new category for 2018 “Outstanding initiative through the Municipal Districts”.
Municipal Districts were introduced under the Local Government Reform Act 2014 as an innovative, countywide, system of governance and local decision-making. This award seeks to recognize the impact of initiatives that maximise the contribution of the municipal district members to local authority effectiveness particularly in terms of governance, local representation, conduct of council business, community engagement and economic, social and local development generally.
The initiative submitted by Arklow Municipal District under this category outlines the establishment of the Arklow Town Team and highlights a number of the successful projects the team has brought about.
Arklow Municipal District is no stranger to these awards, having been shortlisted on a number of occasions. In 2015 Arklow’s Duck Pond, Nature Walk and Leisure Area won the top award in the Excellence in Local Government Awards beating off competition from around the country, under the Parks and Recreations category.
Commenting on the nominations, the Cathaoirleach of Arklow Municipal District, Cllr Miriam Murphy, stated: “I am delighted that Arklow Municipal District, has been recognised nationally by this nomination and I would like to congratulate all involved. It is recognition of the fact that so many people in the local authority and the community are delivering great work on a daily basis.”
