East Coast Greenway petition reaches over 8,000 signatures

Over 8,000 people have signed a petition showing their support of a Greenway that would connect a number of towns along Wicklow’s coast.

The East Coast Greenway Group, creators of the petition, are petitioning Wicklow TD Simon Harris to use his influence and seniority to ensure the project is fast tracked.

It proposes a cycle and walking route to be built along the coast connecting Wicklow Town, Kilcoole, Newcastle and Greystones.

Chairman of the group, Ciaran Lally believes the project will generate badly needed economic development for the towns and bring an influx of tourists to the county.

The project would also see offshore coastal protection built, which “has has increased at an alarming rate in recent years”.

“We are frustrated that many of our elected and public officials cannot see the urgency and strategic importance of this project — they can and need to do more,” Mr Lally added.

Wicklownews.net recently spoke with people at the Murrough in Wicklow Town to hear their thoughts on the proposed Greenway.

The group have recently launched a website, Eastcoastgreenway.ie, with news and updates on the project.
