Katie Taylor will defend her WBA and IBF world lightweight titles against veteran Cindy Serrano in Boston on the 20th of October.
Taylor’s fight will be one of three title fights to take place inside the TD Garden — the home of the Boston Celtics basketball team and the Boston Bruins ice hockey team.
Her bout against the current WBO champion Serrano will be Taylor’s 11th fight since turning professional in 2016, while her New York-based opponent holds a 27-5-3 record since turning pro back in 2003.
Speaking at a press conference which confirmed the fight yesterday, Taylor said that she was looking forward to a ‘homecoming fight’ due to the Irish population in Boston.
“I love the city of Boston and it’s going to feel like a homecoming fight for me with all the Irish people here. I want to thank Cindy for taking the fight, it’s going to be an incredible fight.
“These are the fights that I absolutely relish and it’s going to make for such an exciting fight.”
For her part, Serrano credited Taylor as a great fighter and said that she was looking forward to the bout.
“Katie is a tremendous fighter and a hard, hard worker so I know it’s not going to be an easy fight. It’s going to be a great fight. I’m a great fighter myself and I’m training hard,” she said.
Katie’s fight with Serrano will be on a card headlined by the world middleweight championship showdown between Billy Joe Saunders and Demetrius Andrade, while Tevin Farmer’s defence of his IBF super featherweight title against Belfast’s James Tennyson will be the third title fight on the night.
