Wicklow TD and Government Minister, Simon Harris, has announced today that Wicklow communities and clubs can avail of €40 million that has been made available to them under the Sports Capital Programme (SCP).
The SCP is a government support fund to develop sports club infrastructure all around the country.
The programme funds the development of sports necessities like natural grass sports pitches, floodlighting, hurling walls, and the building or refurbishment of all kinds of sports facilities – to name but a few.
Minister Harris has said that the “programme itself has already transformed sports facilities throughout the county.”
“The €40 million that is now available provides an opportunity for even further improvements and I would urge all organisations with a suitable project to apply.”
The government recently launched a new National Sports Policy 2018 – 2027 and refreshed their commitment to investing in sports in the country.
Harris went on to speak about the process of applying for the fund, and the problems that have occured in the past.
He said “while the Sports Capital Programme is already hugely popular with sports clubs across so many different sporting disciplines, we are determined to make the application process as simple and user-friendly as possible.”
“In particular they are introducing some significant changes in the assessment methodology to ensure that we minimise the number of invalid applications. The Department has also confirmed to me that they will also give even greater priority to applications from disadvantaged areas and projects that promote the sharing of sports facilities with other clubs and the wider community.”
Minister Harris is encouraging clubs who are not registered on the Department’s system to do so immediately so as not to miss out on the opportunity to apply for the funding.
Clubs who wish to register can do so at www.sportscapitalprogramme.ie.
There will be an instructional video on the site to show you how to register.
The system will open for applications at 9am on Friday the 7th of December to 5pm on Friday the 18th of October 2018.
