What has already been an amazing year for Arklow woman Mary Hickey, she will reach another milestone on Sunday.
Mary will be running her 39th Dublin City Marathon in memory of her husband Tony who died in June of this year with the proceeds being donated to the Wicklow Hospice Foundation.
Mary said ” It is going to be a tough challenge I have my eye set on next year when I will have run forty Dublin City Marathon’s, I’m not fit and have picked up a few injuries, I don’t want to throw in the towel. So if I have to walk or crawl, I will do it.
I am running, walking or crawling this marathon in aid of the Wicklow Hospice Foundation as Tony wanted to raise money for cancer, Tony had also ran every Marathon and last year even though he was not well, we pushed him around the course in a chair, he hoped to win his battle with cancer but it wasn’t to be.
Sunday will be for him and my brother Michael who also died of cancer.”
On January 1st this year, Mary set about on her breath taking “Lap of the Map”challenge to fundraise for the RNLI, by running anti-clockwise around the entire coast of Ireland.
By the time she arrived back in Arklow on the 14th of April, Mary at the age of 65 had completed over 1509 miles, the equivalent of 57 marathons, in 104 days. In total Mary raised a staggering €72,000.
