An all-inclusive playground which caters for the needs of children of all abilities has been provided by Wicklow County Council in Greystones.
Officially opened this week by Minister of Health, Simon Harris TD, the South Beach playground represents an investment of €300,000 by the Council and the Greystones South Beach Playground Committee.
The design of the playground equipment includes a musical play area, an ability swing, a sensory path, a toddler play area, a wheelchair-accessible sand factory, zip lines and a large activity set. This playground is designed for children to be together, play together and learn together.
As well as the Minister and local dignitaries, the opening ceremony was attended by excited children and their parents, all of whom expressed their delight that this long-awaited facility had finally came to fruition.
Performing the official opening, Minister Harris said he was “especially pleased as Health Minister to be officially opening a new play facility which will afford children the opportunity to engage in more outdoor activities.”
The Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Pat Vance, paid tribute to the contractor, All Play Ltd, for delivering a uniquely designed amenity. He added that Wicklow County Council recognises the benefits of play to both children and society in general and that play is the main method by which children learn to live.
The playground was mainly funded by Wicklow County Council and the Greystones South Beach Playground Committee who raised an unprecedented level of funds for this project. There was also a generous contribution made by a local Greystones resident and a contribution from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
Cllr Nicola Lawless, Cathaoirleach of Greystones Municipal District, stated: “This is a great day for Greystones and the playground will be a central part of our community for many years to come”.
Wicklow County Council Chief Executive, Mr Frank Curran, commented: “It is inspiring to see the number of people who work so hard in a voluntary capacity to improve the quality of life in their community and I would like to acknowledge the Greystones South Beach Committee in particular.” He paid tribute to all the playground committee members for their commitment in assisting with the delivery of this unique all-inclusive playground.
