Aughrim notes week October 8th

Aughrim Community First Responders

Over 13 years ago a small group of people had an idea to create a group called Aughrim Community First Responders. The purpose of this group was to provide life saving first response to the community of Aughrim, responding to emergencies within our community.

One person who was instrumental in the formation of this group was Sharon Keogh. Sharon stepped up and has been a key figure in getting the group to where it is today. She goes above and beyond for the group and covers more than her fair share of days/nights on call. Sharon also put herself forward for additional training to become the group instructor, keeping the groups skills fresh and keeping the group in order too.

As well as teaching the Aughrim group Sharon was also an instructor and committee member for the county group that oversees the majority of the CFR groups in Wicklow. I think it’s fair to say and nobody could disagree with me that Sharon took being a First Responder and Instructor to heart and truly gave more than was expected to the Aughrim community and other communities within Wicklow.

In the early days there were some challenges that faced the group, but through Sharon’s leadership and determination the group thrives and would not be here today if it wasn’t for her. Sharon like all our Responders has entered people’s homes within our community at some of their darkest times and provided lifesaving treatment and comfort to members of our community. Sometimes the outcome was not what the families wanted, but rest assured that everything that could be done was done.

There are many people walking around Aughrim today that are still here because of the interventions of Sharon and the Responders and the Training that the Responders received from Sharon.

Just over 1 year ago Sharon handed over her reins to Philip O’Dwyer. However Sharon has stayed on as a Responder and continued to cover shifts.

Philip personally would like to thank Sharon for putting her faith in him to take over from her and help run and instruct in the group that she has spent so much time building. Sharon has decided to depart from our group to set off on a new adventure and take some well deserved time off. We will miss her and what she brings to the group, however nobody will ever forget Sharon’s contribution to the group and what the Group has contributed to the community.

We wish Sharon, Jim and family all the best for what the future holds. Hopefully someday you will come back to us but until then farewell and bon voyage.
