The Minister for the Environment Denis Naughten has encouraged farmers to avail of a new scheme that will allow for the safe disposal of unused tyres from their farms.
A number of collection points will be established around the country over the next three weeks and farmers are being encouraged to make good use of them in order to protect the environment.
There are an estimated 750,000 tyres dumped illegally in Ireland, and a part of this new scheme is to reduce this illegal waste.
Minister Naughten said last year regarding the allocation of funding to the project: “I am targeting this funding at tyres to clean up our countryside now and to ensure that the detrimental environmental and human health effects of these dumps are dealt with as soon as possible.”
The new farm tyre bring-centres will charge €45 for every 3 tonnes of tyres.
There are approximately seven rear tractor tyres in a tonne.
