O’Brien to stay on as Wicklow minor football boss

Kevin O’Brien will remain as manager of the Wicklow county minor footballers for the 2019 season, the county board has announced.

O’Brien led the minors through a successful 2018, including a Leinster semi-final following victories over Westmeath, Louth, Dublin and Kildare before falling to eventual-winners Meath.

In a statement released this afternoon, the county board confirmed the decision by saying: “Wicklow GAA have reappointed Kevin O’Brien as Manager of the Minor Football Team for the 2019 season. Kevin, one of Wicklow’s most decorated footballers, will look to continue the great work done in 2018 when Wicklow reached the Leinster Minor Semi-Final.

“Building on the positive developments in the Garden County Academy squads over the past number of years is a key priority for Wicklow GAA in 2019.”

O’Brien enjoyed a very successful career as a player, winning an All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship with Baltinglass in 1990, as well as being the only recipient of an All-Star in Wicklow GAA history when he won one at full-forward the same year.

He was also part of the Wicklow team that won the All-Ireland Junior Football Championship in 2002, before being inducted into the GAA Hall of Fame eight years later in 2010.
