Coolboy and Shillelagh GAA clubs have announced their amalgamation with immediate effect.
The clubs held extraordinary general meetings (EGM) on Thursday evening to discuss their respective futures, following an uncertain 2018.
In a joint statement, the clubs said that the amalgamation was “the next chapter in the proud history of both clubs” after the decision to conjoin was made at their corresponding EGMs.
“The respective memberships of both Coolboy GAA and Shillelagh GAA voted unanimously in favour of full amalgamation (adult and juvenile) to take effect immediately. This vote was the fruition of many months of work and collective discussions by representatives of both clubs.
“In what was an obviously emotive topic, the overriding sentiment was this merger was the optimum path forward to not just preserve but rather enhance and strengthen our GAA heritage in our corner of Wicklow.
“Our commitment is to continue to represent our communities, families and friends on and off the field in a manner that befits them. Our names and our history continues, our presence continues and we collectively look forward to laying the foundations to ensure that this merger is successful for generations to come, on and off the field.”
Other details concerning the amalgamation such as the name of the new club will be discussed at a meeting between the committees of both Shillelagh and Coolboy.
