Arklow Town Football Club have partnered with the Football Asoociation of Ireland to bring ‘Walking Football’ to the area later this month.
The non-contact, non-running form of the sport is designed specifically for people over the age of 55, and is delivered in partnership with the FAI and the local sports partnership in Wicklow.
The game, which is intended to assist with mobility, and to promote the playing of football, has a specific ruleset, with over-head height restrictions and indirect free kicks — coupled with the outlawing of contact and running — ensuring that the sport is played safely, and with full consideration to the participants’ age in a safe environment.
Matches are usually played in a five-a-side or six-a-side format, and will be contested on Arklow Town FC’s astro pitch, thus reducing the threat of pain, discomfort and injury.
The club has said that the set-up “allows people who have loved the sport all their lives to once again safely get back to playing and also introduces the sport to people who perhaps have never considered playing before.”
Anybody interested in taking part in ‘Walking Football’ is encourage to travel to Arklow Town Football Club on Thursday 21st February for the first session at 10am, where FAI coaches will be on hand to welcome all participants.
