Chairman of the board of Management of Avondale Community College, Rathdrum , Jimmy O’Shaughnessy has welcome the news that the college has been approved for a further extension to the school.
This will increase the capacity of the college to cater for 750 students.
Speaking to Wicklownews, O’Shaughnessy said
“The new school that opened in 1992 was to cater for 275 students at that time, the school was extended in 2007 to cater or for 562 second level students from the wider-hinterland of the catchment area.
With the huge success of the school and the local feeder schools in the community there is now an urgent need for this new extension to the college.
With the increasing developments of houses in the Rathdrum area this could see the numbers of students reaching over 900 in the coming years.
Whilst we welcome this new extension, the green fields area on the site will disappear to carter for any new extension that might be need in the future, this will leave restricted recreation area for the students.
With this in mind the board of management are seeking more land.”
